While each roof has its own natural weather resistance, with some having better resistance than others, there are ways you can improve them short of replacing your roofing material. WaterpROOFessional, one of the area’s top local roofing contractors, lists four ways to increase the weather resistance of the roof.
1. Replace Damaged Flashings
The flashings are the thin metal strips that you find covering the most vulnerable parts of the roof, such as the valleys and hips. While their main role is to prevent water damage to these areas, they are as susceptible to rain and moisture, if not even more so.
Our professional roofing company recommends keeping an eye out for the flashings and replacing them when they are starting to show damage or advanced wear and tear. You can tell this quite easily; see if they’re loose where they are installed or if the tar holding them in place is mostly gone.
2. Apply Water Sealants
Water sealants are a great way to quickly increase the weather resistance of your roof. While often used for wood and cedar shake roofs, some sealants are made specifically for asphalt, tile and metal. You can think of sealants as a pseudo-coating that you apply as a layer of protection on the surface of the roof. Their lifespan depends on what kind of sealants you use, but they will typically last for 10 years.
3. Clean the Gutters
Clogged gutters can damage your roof if left unaddressed. Apart from causing water to spill onto the surface of the roof, the extra weight on the gutters can actually pull the edge of the roof, damaging it and even loosening the shingles. You avoid this by simply cleaning the gutters or installing a cover or guard to prevent leaves and debris from entering the gutters in the first place.
4. Preventive Repair
Finally, performing preventive repair on the roof at least twice a year is a good idea. This allows you to head off problems, such as leaks, and prevent them from becoming bigger and more expensive problems to address in the future.
At WaterpROOFessional, we offer all four of these as part of our residential roofing services. Call us today at (217) 280-8331 to learn more about our services. We are local roofing contractors in Champaign, IL.
